India's
Amazing Animals
Nothing matches an early morning cruise to see elephants grazing
beside a tranquil
lake or an evening excursion to see a swamp sky
filled with birds.
Wildlife adventures come in many shapes and sizes
in India, a country
where the fauna is as diverse as its people.
From the wet tropical evergreen forests found in the lush lowlands
of Kerala to
the dry alpine scrub seen in the Himalayas more than
500 different
kinds of mammals can be seen in these forests along
with 2,000 different
species of birds and for the sharp
eyed over
30,000 types of insects,
fish, reptiles and amphibians.
A number of the mammals are unique to India while
others are
often closely associated
with the vast country. For instance, the Asian
lion of Gir, the
white tiger of Rewa, the wild ass of Kutch, the golden
langur of
Assam, the black buck of Karmur, the
barasingha of
Kanha, the
chowsingha ( the male of this species is the only animal
with four horns)
of Bandipur, the Royal Bengal
Tiger, the Indian
Elephant, the gaur
and the sambar are all exclusive to India.
Much of this menagerie can be safely viewed
in more than 100
wildlife sanctuaries.
Touring is by car or four wheel drive vehicle,
elephant, pony, boat
or, in some cases, on foot.
The best season for game viewing varies depending on the terrain
and rainfall
patterns but generally March through May is the most
reliable time to
visit the national parks. The monsoon season makes
touring impossible
at some sanctuaries from about mid-June to
October.
One of the most sought after animals on wildlife safaris is the lion,
the strongest
of all carnivores and India's first national animal. The
only place
where lion are now naturally found is in Gir Forest.
It's
a 1&1/4
hours flight northwest from
Mumbai followed by a
50-minute drive.
Gir's
Asiatic species of lion differs from
its African cousin by
having a scanty
mane, a longer tassel of hair at the end of the tail
and heavier tufts
of hair at the elbow.
Perhaps equal in popularity to the
lion is the tiger.The national
animal of India since
1972, the tiger is an individualist as
it lives
alone. Despite
a massive decline in numbers from an estimated
40,000 at
the turn of the century the Indian Tiger is still the
most
abundant of all the
sub-species.
Corbett National Park, about 180 miles northwest of New Delhi by
road, in the
Himalayan foothills and Kanha Sanctuary, reached by
flying to Jabalpur
or Nagpur in central India and then driving
170
miles north,
offer two good locations to see this
elusive animal.
From Corbett travellers can head northeast
and conclude their
wildlife tour
with a visit to Kaziranga Sanctuary, a two-hour
flight
northeast of
Calcutta to Jorhat followed by a two-hour drive.
The
Indian rhinoceros
found here stands up to two metres
at the
shoulder and
reaches a length of up to 4.25 metres. Aside
from
rhino, Kaziranga
is also home to wild buffalo, swamp
deer, hog
deer, pig, elephant,
tiger and many birds.
A varied
bird life can be found in most national parks in India. Not
far from
the Taj Mahal at Agra and an easy drive from the deserted
city of Fatehpur
Sikri is Bharatpur's Keolade Ghana Bird Sanctuary.
Over 300
different species of water birds winter
in its marshes.
Ducks, teal,
geese, Siberian cranes, painted
storks, egrets,
cormorants
and heron nest in Acacia trees dotting the sanctuary.
Farther south in Bandipur and Mudumalai Sanctuaries which
are
near each
other and approximately midway between Ootacamund
and Mysore in southern
India, animal enthusiasts and bird watchers
alike share the same
vehicle as they take morning and evening
game drives
to see an amazing panorama of Nature's diversity.
