Mr. Thomas E. King

Handmade in Taiwan

Everyday  throughout  the  island  nation  of  Taiwan, highly  skilled
artisans  create  an  amazing  range of  handcrafted specialties using
time-tested  techniques  that  have  been  passed  down  through the
generations. Embroidery  is  one  of the ancient handicrafts of  China.
Tainan,  Taiwan's  fourth  largest city,  is home to a number of places
where colourful embroidery is still carefully produced by hand.
One  such  centre  is  the  Traditional  Folk  Embroidery  Art Shop
where huge panels of orange, red and yellow   silk richly embroidered
with  dragons  or other  signs  of  the  Chinese zodiac cover the walls.
An increasing  number  of foreigntourists buy the exquisite pieces of
embroidered silk for display as ornate wall decorations.
Another  popular  souvenir  is a paper lantern although these days
many are mass produced. In the west coast port town of Lukang, Mr
Wu Tun-hou  has  been  a  lantern  maker for nearly 65 years. Using
traditional methods to actually weave bamboo strips into a framework,
then glue  light  paper  or  even  silk on to the structure Mr Wu finally
paints  the  fragile  lantern in a multitude of colours and patterns. His
 favourite symbol is the dragon.
Mr Wu  is  the  only  lantern  maker in Lukang while, a few streets
away,  Mr Chen Wan-Neng, Taiwan's  sole  master  craftsman  in tin
works  with  the  metal  to  produce  prized  pieces  of  art  based on
 characters from Chinese folklore.
Just  outside  Taipei  is  an  entire  town  virtually  devoted  to the
production  of  handicrafts  from  a  special clay. In Yingge, which is
classed   as   the  nation's   main   production  centre   of  ceramics,
visitors  can  make  their  own choice souvenir or buy it in one of the
100 shops located along Old Pottery Street.
